A serious accident happened in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin on Sunday morning. A car drove into a crowd near the Zoo train station. The driver was arrested.
The man, who hit several people at Berlin’s Hardenbergplatz and sometimes seriously injured him, was not sober, police said. A breath alcohol test gave him a value of 0.7 per mille, a police spokesman said on Sunday afternoon. There are no indications of drug use. An RBB reporter first reported on the result of the alcohol measurement.
Three men seriously injured
The police spokesman also corrected the number of injuries: Instead of the four minor injuries initially stated, there were only three minor injuries – one man and two women – and three seriously injured men. According to the spokesman, the seriously injured belong to the homeless environment. Two of the three men were still unresponsive in the afternoon and their identity was not known.
A 24-year-old man drove his SUV into a crowd at Hardenbergplatz in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district. 24-year-old arrested
The 24-year-old was arrested on site. A police spokesman said he was being investigated on suspicion of attempted manslaughter and dangerous interventions in road traffic. There is no evidence of an illegal car race in the middle of the city.
The man got off the road on Sunday at 7:20 a.m. and drove into the group of people. A person was trapped under the vehicle and came to the hospital like the other injured after the rescue and resuscitation, the fire department said. The police initially gave the number of injuries to seven. Several eyewitnesses were looked after by emergency ministers. In the area at the Zoologischer Garten station, many people are out on Sunday mornings.
The accident car bumped into a mailbox at Zoo station. The exact route is still unclear, said the police spokeswoman. Local investigators interviewed witnesses and examined the off-road vehicle. Hardenbergstrasse and the exit from the Zoologischer Garten S-Bahn station were closed until noon.
