Two people were injured in a serious car accident in Hamburg-Barmbek early Friday morning. The drivers of the two vehicles involved are said to have previously engaged in an illegal car race.
According to the police, the suspected speeders were driving significantly too fast on Hamburger Strasse around 3 a.m. A red light at the Dehnhaide intersection finally stopped the driver of the car in front. But his pursuer apparently noticed this too late. Almost without braking, he crashed into the stationary car.
Driver escapes despite injury
The impact was so strong that the car in front rolled over and took down a traffic light pole. The driver was injured but still got away. To do this, he first stopped an uninvolved vehicle and wanted to be driven to the hospital. According to police, at the next opportunity he jumped out of the car and fled.
Police investigations are ongoing
In addition to the driver of the first vehicle, a passenger in the second car was also injured. The police temporarily closed Hamburger Strasse to record the accident. The investigation is ongoing. There is suspicion of illegal street racing, said a spokesman. The police are therefore looking for witnesses to the accident.
