Before the tough London derby against Chelsea tonight, Arsenal had lost three league games in a row – against Southampton, Brighton and Crystal Palace.
Ødegaard – captain for the second game in a row – was good tonight, led the troops and also had a goal-scoring pass when Emile Smith-Rowe sent Arsenal up to a 2-1 lead in a fast-paced first half.
The former Chelsea player and manager Roberto Di Matteo liked what he saw of the Norwegian.
– An exceptional player. He was very involved in important phases tonight – as before, Di Matteo says to TV 2.
Chelsea came back and equalized before Eddie Nketiah increased to 3-2 in the 70th minute. Nketiah also scored the first goal of his second league start of the season.
The match was decided when Bukayo Saka and Arsenal were penalized for overtime. The referee had no doubts and he gave a penalty in favor of César Azpilicueta.
First Saka penalty after the European Championship miss
Saka, who is well remembered for his penalty miss for England in the European Championship final in 2020, took the penalty himself and set the final score at 4-2. This was his first penalty since the championship.
– We wanted the fans to have faith in us again, and I think we managed that today. We showed character and fought. This was a great result for us, says Saka to Sky Sports.
After the match, Azpilicueta – who scored the 2-2 goal for Chelsea – ended up in a scuffle with some spectators. Chelsea have now lost their last three home games and have conceded 11 goals.
The first tonight, Andreas Christensen gets to take the blame for. He missed a rebound to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, something Eddie Nketiah took advantage of. The Dane never came on the field until the second half.
