The Latvian 3 × 3 basketball team with Agni Čavars, Nauri Mieze, Kārlis Pauls Lasmanis and Edgars Krūmiņš won the Netherlands in the last, seventh game of the Tokyo Olympic Games group tournament on Tuesday. Latvia won with the result 22:18, securing the third place in the group and meeting in the quarterfinals with Japan.
Latvia scored nine points for Miezis, six for Čavars, five for Lasmanis and two for Krūmiņš. For the Netherlands, Dimeo van der Horst scored eight points. The Latvian team provided the Lion’s Court or 14 points with long shots, realizing them with 50% accuracy (7/14). Opponents have more long-range shots (16), but much lower accuracy (3 or 19%).
Latvia took the lead with Lasmanis’ throw, later adding a long throw to Krūmiņš – 3: 0. The Netherlands regained one point after more than one minute played, Lasmanis reached 4: 1, but the opponents responded with a throw behind the perimeter. Another long shot from the Netherlands already made Latvia 4: 5, but Krūmiņš equalized the result. Opponents responded with a point, but Chavars threw a long shot – 7: 6. The Netherlands reached a draw again, but a barley throw followed from a distance – 9: 7 in favor of Latvia. Later, opponents responded to Barley with another long shot and maintained a two-point distance (11: 9). Barley reached 12: 9 with a half shot, the opponents regained the point, but Lasmanis threw a long shot, realized the earned “penalty” and gave the Latvians the biggest advantage in the match so far (15:10).
The Dutch threw a free throw, to which Chavar responded with a throw around the perimeter – 17:11. The next two points for Latvia were scored by Meizis, who reached 19:13. Latvia needed one accurate long shot to score, but several attempts were unsuccessful. Barley scored 20 points for Latvia, but the Dutch threw two “penalties” and one of the games – 20:18. Chavar threw a long shot 99 seconds before the end of the game and reached 22:18.
The quarter-finals will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 3 pm and 4 pm.
It has already been reported that in the first match of the tournament, Latvia defeated Poland with 21:14, then conceded with Belgium with 20:21, followed by success with 18:17 against China. Japan was then defeated with 21:18, and Serbia’s main favorite had to be recognized with 16:22. Latvia’s opponent, the Netherlands, lost to Serbia at the beginning of the tournament with 15:16, then celebrated three victories – against ROC (18:15), Japan (21:20) and China (21:18), followed by failure against Belgium (17:18). and success over Poland (22:20).
The Olympic 3 × 3 basketball tournament, in which Latvia hopes to fight for medals, will run until July 28. In a 3 × 3 basketball tournament, there is only one group with eight units fighting. The play-off will include the top six, whose races will continue in the 1/4 final, but the two strongest will miss the quarter-final phase after the group tournament and automatically reach the semi-finals.
