Captain America’s origin story isn’t exactly what we thought we knew from the MCU movies. It is actually much darker and closer to reality.

Steve Rogers’ transformation into Captain America is chronicled in First Avenger. The film features a sick and frail young Steve who becomes a super soldier following a successful US government experiment. After exiting the pod, Rogers’ main goal is to use his superhuman strength. to prevent HYDRA from taking over the world. But was that really why a super soldier was created?
To understand the other motives for the creation of Captain America, it is important to return to the political context in which it took place.
Rogers was the first of many super soldier programs that the US government has launched over the decades. To name a few, Wolverine (Weapon X) and Hulk were both creations from the same project.
Captain America was not created to kill, but to survive
But contrary to what one might think, Rogers was not only transformed into a superman to serve as a weapon for the American army. It has indeed been modified to be able to survive, together with other super soldiers, a possible nuclear bomb attack from Germany or Russia. The idea was to have as many supermen as possible, to make sure we had survivors. Unfortunately, Abraham Erskine was killed shortly after Captain America was created.
These explanations on the background and the real reasons for the creation of the super-soldiers are revealed in le comics Spider-Man # 19. In the latter, the United States is lagging behind in the nuclear arms race during the Cold War. At the time, the country believed that Nazi Germany was ahead. Fearing potential annihilation if the Nazis dropped a bomb, the US government was looking for different ways to ensure the survival of the country – hence the super-soldier program.
The MCU and Marvel comics are therefore very faithful to real-world history, which makes this tale of Captain America’s origin even more believable. If the Marvel superhero is now retired, his legacy will still be present in the MCU. Sam Wilson will indeed take over from Rogers in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the release of which has been postponed for the time being.
