Captain America – The Winter Soldier: this fight with Hawkeye which unfortunately did not see the light of day

From Batroc to his old friend Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers faces several formidable opponents in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Hawkeye could have been one of them, since he was supposed to chase the superhero through the streets of Washington.

Captain America – The Winter Soldier : state enemy

After more than sixty years of sleep and a rude awakening at the end of Captain America : First Avenger, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) tries to adapt to the modern world in the second opus of the MCU which is dedicated to him. Joe and Anthony Russo’s first feature film for the Marvel universe begins in 2014, two years after the terrible attack on New York fomented by Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in Avengers.

In Captain America: The Winter Soldierthe superhero leader becomes SHIELD’s prey. Shortly after informing Steve Rogers of the existence of the disturbing Project Insight, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is the victim of an assassination attempt by a mysterious killer, the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan ).

Refusing to cooperate with Fury’s superior, Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford), Captain America becomes suspicious and finds himself pursued by SHIELD agents led by Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo). With the help of Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), Rogers tries to uncover the reasons for this plot as well as the identity of the Winter Soldier. He discovers that SHIELD may have secret ties to Hydra.

A missed fight against Hawkeye

Hawkeye’s debut in the MCU was not easy. After a short appearance in Thorthe famous archer actually finds himself under the influence of Loki during the first part ofAvengers. Moreover, in 2014, the character does not manage to find a place in the second part of the adventures of Steve Rogers. The screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had however planned a scene for him, which could not see the light of day due to schedule constraints for Jeremy Renner.

The purpose of this sequence was to pit Captain America against one of his friends from SHIELD, which would have amplified the moral dilemmas the superhero faces in the feature film. During this famous aborted passage, Clint Barton was supposed to Chase him through the streets of Washington. The two Avengers were then to face each other.

Black Widow’s iconic partner would then faked a defeat to let Rogers escape, as Joe Russo explains to Screenrant in 2014 :

Hawkeye fired a series of arrows as he closed in on Cap. (…) Afterwards, Cap knocked him down and realized that Hawkeye was trying to fool SHIELD. He whispered something in Cap’s ear to let him know he had a tracker on his costume and asked him to punch it to make it sound real.

The confrontation unfortunately did not take place, but Captain America does not rest in the film, fighting squads of SHIELD, his old friend Bucky Barnes or the formidable mercenary Batroc (Georges St-Pierre). As for Hawkeye, his importance continues to grow thereafter within the MCU, including in Captain America : Civil Warwhere he joined the ranks of Steve Rogers.
