“Captain America: Civil War” was a big commercial success of the year 2016. However, not all actors were happy with the end of their respective characters. One in particular: Frank Grillo. Whoever plays Crossbones was very annoyed with the fate of the supervillain.
Crossbones: the man who wanted to kill Captain America
Captain America : Civil War was a film eagerly awaited by viewers, but also avid readers of Marvel comics. Indeed, the feature film adapted one of the most popular series of the license.
Thus, in Civil War, Iron Man and Captain America become fierce enemies, following the enactment of a law requiring all superheroes to reveal their secret identities, so that the authorities can better control their activities. This decree then causes a split among the heroes: those who agree to play the game (Iron Man) and those who refuse to abide by this law (Captain America).
The comic book series ends with a huge battle in New York between the two camps. At the end of this terrible confrontation, Steve Rogers decides to go to the authorities. Only, during his court hearing, a mercenary named Crossbones wounds him with sniper fire. This act has many consequences for the rest of the license, and makes the supervillain an important character in the Marvel universe. No wonder Marvel Studios is including Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, before bringing it back in Captain America : Civil War.
A too premature disappearance, according to Frank Grillo
Crossbones thus appears at the beginning of the film Captain America : Civil War, waging a fierce battle against the Avengers. Yet while one would have thought that the mercenary seriously injures Captain America (as it did in the comics), he eventually disappears, attempting to take the superhero with him in death. A very surprising death, while some fans expected him to be much more present in this film.
This death especially angered his interpreter Frank Grillo, to the point that he does not want to reprise his role in Avengers Endgame. Indeed, in the film, Captain America and his companions travel in time and find characters like him. It was then his son who convinced him to play Crossbones once again. During his interview in the podcast Lights Camera Barstool, the American comedian returned to this case:
I was a little pissed off about this, as I had signed a seven movie deal with Marvel. It was a bit like, “Oh, you’re gonna be in the MCU” and it ultimately didn’t happen. They called me and they said: “We need you for a week, to Avengers : Endgame “. So I asked why, and they said, “We can’t really tell you.” So I said I wasn’t coming, and hung up.
Frank Grillo finally took over his character for a short scene. The actor even reconciled with Marvel afterwards, since he will double Crossbones in the animated series What if…?, scheduled for August on Disney +.
