The new Speaker of the US House of Representatives announced Friday that more than 40,000 hours of video surveillance captured during the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol building will be published on a website.
A congressional committee conducted an investigation into the attack launched by supporters of former Republican President Donald Trump against Congress, and examined thousands of hours of surveillance video.
Republican Representative from Louisiana, Mike Johnson, said on the
Johnson, who supports Trump in his bid to return to the White House in 2024, said that videos related to the Capitol building would be posted on a public website.
Johnson stressed that “this decision will allow millions of Americans, the defendants, public interest organizations, and the media to see for themselves what happened that day, instead of having to rely on the interpretation of a small group of political figures.”
He explained that in the photos that will be published soon, faces will be blurred to avoid possible “retaliatory” reactions.
A House of Representatives committee had recommended that Trump, the most likely candidate to win the Republican Party’s nomination to run in the 2024 presidential elections, be charged with rebellion and committing other crimes related to the Capitol riots.
Trump will be tried in March in Washington on charges of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
It is worth noting that more than 1,200 people were arrested in connection with the January 6, 2021 attack.
