Hann. Münden – After almost two years, Wolfgang Würker’s team sees the Capitol cinema in Hann. Münden is still on the right track: “We still exist,” says Würker. However, in line with the national and global trend, audience numbers are still nowhere near the level they were before the pandemic: Statistics show that cinemas in North America and Europe had around 30 percent fewer viewers this summer.

He now has a well-rehearsed team of four to five people around him who keep the cinema running in the city of three rivers and bring a lot of joy to their work. “It’s important to show customers that we have fun at work,” emphasizes Würker. As in other cinemas, the good weather in May and June depressed viewer numbers.

Würker sees the increasing number of streaming services as one reason why fewer visitors go to the cinema than before. In addition, films are often released in cinemas and as a streaming service at the same time. In his opinion, the cinema experience means celebrating watching films, sharing emotions and feeling connected to other cinema-goers.

“We tried to attract more people to the Capitol cinema in Münden with blockbusters in the warm months. “Unfortunately, that didn’t work quite as well as hoped,” says Würker.

Fortunately, the bad weather with rain in July and August led to an increase in visitor numbers again. “The films Oppenheimer and Barbie in particular attracted viewers to the cinema,” says Würker. This is all too understandable, as both films are high-quality productions.

The Hann. Münden’s cinema is now running similarly to that in Witzenhausen. He and his team are proud when the cinema receives an award like it recently did (we reported). “This means appreciation for us and shows that our efforts are worthwhile,” continued Würker.

To get more people into Hann. To attract Münden cinema, he also relies on special events and additions to the films, such as conversations with the director or, in the case of the film Oppenheimer, background information on the historical figure’s life in Göttingen.

“Special events make viewers realize that cinema is made by flesh and blood people. “That’s something completely different than just playing a film,” says Wolfgang Würker. It is important to him that people in the region see the cinema as “their cinema”. That’s why the connection with the city is important.

According to Würker, the cinema will take part in the nationwide cinema festival 2023 for the first time next weekend. “The ticket costs five euros for every film we have in the program on Saturday and Sunday,” says Würker. There is something for every taste this weekend.

For example, two previews of promising comedies can be seen, such as the film “The Simple Things” and “Best Man”. At the end of the festival, Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” can also be seen for five euros. Würker cites the event “Tuesday at Three – Cinema for Seniors and Other Film Enthusiasts” as examples of other special dates. This event takes place on the last Tuesday of each month.

The new series “Classics of German Film” starts on September 12th and every second Tuesday of the month.

The first film in this series will be “Roses for the Public Prosecutor” from 1959, which will be shown on September 12th at 3 p.m. Three films will be shown as part of the Münden Cinema of Diversity during the intercultural week. Würker mentions “Church and Cinema” as another new series. This was brought into being together with Deacon Andreas Litzke.

This series starts on October 25th and runs on the last Wednesday of the month. On the International Day of Violence Against Women on November 24th, in collaboration with the Equal Opportunities Officer of the City of Hann. Münden, Melissa Castillo, the film “Just a Woman” shown. (Thomas Schlenz)
