Capesterre-Belle-Eau: bathing ban on Bananier beach due to pollution

Bananier beach in Capesterre-Belle-eau is prohibited for bathing due to bacteriological pollution. Wastewater discharges are said to be the cause of water quality degradation.

Bad news for surfers in Basse-Terre, their favorite spot, Bananier beach in Capesterre-Belle-Eau is prohibited for swimming.

A stop taken two weeks ago by the municipality following the results of the samples taken by the regional health authority (ARS). They reveal the existence of bacteriological pollution in the water, caused by nearby wastewater discharges.

In fact, a few meters from the shore, a small greenish stream joins the sea.

According to Jerry Pelikan, head of an NGO for the protection of the sea, these wastewater discharges come from surrounding homes.

This is a key issue as it affects marine life, coral in particular. Today you have 70% coral in Guadeloupe, already dead.

Bananier beach is not an isolated case. In 2021, there were eight sites in Guadeloupe classified red for the insufficient quality of their bathing waters.
