Capcom once again broke its record for games sold in the last fiscal year, as well as its operating profit. It was the 10th consecutive year of record results for the producer from Osaka, which reaps the rewards of a model of quality over quantity and increasingly benefits from the digitization of its product catalogue.
The Japanese publisher distributed 41.7 million games between April 2022 and March 2023, up from 32.6 million the previous year. Released in June 2022, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak totaled 5.45 million sales while Resident Evil 4 sold 3.75 million copies in a few days. Games released in previous fiscal years total 29.3 million sales and include Monster Hunter World (18.8 million total), Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (10.2 million), Monster Hunter Rise (12.7 million), Resident Evil Village (7.9 million), Resident Evil 7 (12 million), Resident Evil 2 (12 million) or even Resident Evil 3 (7 million).
Physical game sales dropped again during the fiscal year, but this should be good news as the publisher is focused on its digital strategy. Physical sales thus represent 4.4 million games sold, against 37.3 million games sold by download. Compared to most other Japanese publishers, it is important to consider that Capcom achieves these results without the help of cell phones, a market that represents a negligible portion of its accounts, at least until the partnership with Niantic and Monster Hunter Now gets off the ground. .
Following the earnings announcement, shares of the company hit 5,270 yen ($38.97) on the Tokyo Stock Exchange earlier today. Ten years ago, the share price was around ¥390 ($2.92).
Capcom said it expects to break sales and profit records again in its current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2024, with the release of Street Fighter 6 in June and the first-ever Exoprimal in July.
Capcom’s president recently said that the company aims to sell 10 million copies of Street Fighter 6, which would break the series record of 7 million set by Street Fighter V.
