Cantonal council ironed out rounding errors in proportional representation

The seat allocation procedure for proportional representation in the Canton of Zurich will be changed. This is to ensure that the will of the voters is reflected as precisely as possible.

When allocating seats in parliamentary elections in the canton of Zurich, due to the rounding of a number, it has so far happened that individual seats were allocated to the wrong party. On Monday, the Cantonal Council approved a parliamentary initiative by Ruedi Lais (SP, Wallisellen) to correct the error.

The rounding before the upper allocation of the seats led to municipal council elections in Dietikon and Schlieren in 2018 that one seat each went to a mathematically incorrect party, Lais justified his approach.

Dispensing with rounding to the nearest whole number at this point in the allocation process eliminates the problem. The change was undisputed in Parliament. Justice Director Jacqueline Fehr (SP) also spoke out in favor of the move and the proposed change.

The business now goes to the editorial committee and is then finally dealt with in the cantonal council.
