The municipality of Muri bei Bern thinks that it is primarily up to the canton of Bern to find a solution for the future course of the controversial Aare trail between the Muriger Wehrliau and the municipal swimming pool on the Aare. The Murig authorities are thinking of making selective adjustments to the cantonal hydraulic engineering plan from 2012.

The leadership of the canton in this matter is asked because the protection concerns in this area are “highly complex and sometimes contradicting”, said the municipality of Muri on Wednesday. She informed the cantonal construction and traffic director Christoph Neuhaus in a letter.

According to the announcement, the Bern Region Water Association co-signed this letter. He operates drinking water wells in the Muriger Wehrliau.

The municipality of Muri made the announcement in connection with the protection plan for the Aare Muri, the revision of which began in August of last year. A project team has now formulated three strategic thrusts. Muri’s authorities describe the route between Wehrliau and Muribad as the “tough nut to crack in bank protection planning”.

The cantonal hydraulic engineering plan of 2012 provided for the path that now runs along the Aare to be replaced by a footbridge. In view of technical difficulties, the canton made the proposal in 2017 to relocate the Aare trail away from the bank to the slope.

This idea met with resistance: over 3,000 people petitioned the Muri town council to keep the existing route.

In order to gain time to find a solution, the municipality and the canton of Bern agreed on a five-year moratorium. The bank was temporarily protected with groynes made of trees. According to information from Muri, these groynes can only be approved for a limited period of time.
