Victory Day 9 May is celebrated annually by Russia to mark the day the Soviet Union’s war victory over Nazi Germany in 1945 at the end of World War II. On that date, Putin designated it a national holiday to glorify Russia.
Reports of Putin taking full control of the invasion came from a senior EU source who spoke to Mujtaba Rahman, managing director at Eurasia Group.

Prior to this, General Aleksandr Dvornikov was said to be in command of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, neither the Kremlin nor the Moscow military have confirmed who is in charge of the field over the war.
The report said that Putin, who is 69 years old, had ordered his war-weary generals to seize the town of Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Such symbolic success can be fed into the Kremlin’s propaganda machine, masking a military campaign that Western media outlets have described as “stuttering”.
The war between Russian troops and Ukrainian forces has dragged on since it began February 24. Moscow’s combat equipment is forced to face the defense of Ukraine, which is supported by modern weapons from NATO countries, especially from the United States (US).
Moscow troops have withdrawn from the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, under the pretext that they only want to focus on eastern Ukraine to liberate the Donbass region.
