A special camera should monitor the cargo area and prevent theft of equipment.
Overseas, pick-ups are very popular among craftsmen and suppliers of various services. For cars without a lockable hard-top, which limits practicality, but there is a risk that curious miscreants will take something from the trunk. After all, theft cannot be completely ruled out even for cars with a body, or classic vans.
Ford, which is among the largest producers of pick-up trucks and utility vehicles overseas, has therefore joined forces with ADT, which offers security services, security, etc. Already last year, the two companies announced the establishment of a joint venture called Canopy, which in the future would have to offer a security device with video recording that should ease the worries of pickup truck owners.
Canopy’s first product is the now-presented Pickup Cam, which can already be ordered overseas. The camera consists of two parts, the most prominent being the camera module with a 180° field of view and dynamic light. It is mounted in the rear window of the car. The camera records the body, while the dynamic light should warn the thief that the car is guarded.
The second part of the camera is the so-called Hub, i.e. the brain of the camera, which ensures communication with the smartphone and is also capable of sending video. The hub is equipped with a battery that powers the camera when the engine is off. After booting up, the camera will start charging automatically via the OBD-II cable. At the same time, the camera would not have to be installed only in pick-ups, it could also be used in vans.
The installation of the device was supposed to be so easy that customers could do it at home within 15 minutes. Once the system is activated, car owners will receive an alert every time the camera detects suspicious activity in their field of view. The recording will also start at the same time and the car owner can choose to contact the security agency ADT via the app if needed.
The idea sounds interesting, practical and quite simple, but the system is not exactly cheap. The purchase price is $299 (approx. CZK 6,500), and then $14.99 (CZK 330) is paid monthly for internet connection and cloud services. For the first 1,500 users, the company reduced the purchase price to $149.50 (CZK 3,300). For craftsmen who have had equipment stolen from the back of their car before, but it can still be a bearable expense.
At the same time, the Canopy Pickup Cam system has its alternative for passenger cars – the Ring Car Cam. The camera takes up the cabin and the space in front of the car, so it is a 2 in 1 solution. However, the price starts at $249.99 (CZK 5,500), while the monthly fee comes to $6 (approx. KZK 130).
