SPACE — Canopus is the second brightest star in the night sky. Canopus’ position is under Sirius, the brightest star.
Reported from Skyandtelescope, Canopus is the brightest star in the southern constellation Carina. With about eight or nine times the mass of the Sun, Canopus is more than 70 times the thickness of the Sun. Its brightness is more than 10,000 to 13,000 compared to the sun.
Canopus also maintains a very high surface temperature of around 7,000 degrees Celsius. Canopus is 300 light years from Earth.

This high luminosity combined with its isolation from other bright stars made Canopus a good navigation guide star for the Voyager spacecraft.
For information, the Voyager 1 probe belonging to the American Space Agency (NASA) was launched in 1977 and has passed through interstellar space in 2012. The Voyager 2 probe was also launched in 1977. Both of these probes were launched to investigate Jupiter and Saturn.
