What would Cannes be without Arnaud Desplechin? The filmmaker from Roubaix has shown the vast majority of his films on the Croisette, like Deception last year. On the occasion of the 75th festival, organized from May 17 to 28, he will present in competition, on the arm of his actors Marion Cotillard and Melvil Poupauda new feature film titled Brother and sisternotably shot on his native lands as was Roubaix, a light in 2019. « A bit like the continuation of a family novel which he made part of his work », according to Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate, who unveiled the official selection this Thursday morning in Paris.

Let’s stay in the Hauts-de-France for a moment to talk about The worst by Lise Akoka and Romance Gueret, largely shot near Boulogne-sur-Mer with many extras, in the Un certain regard section. The story of a group of teenagers who participate precisely in the making of a film.

Two Hauts-de-France banners, therefore, for an event that remains a snapshot of the state of the world. Witness the selection of Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa (The Natural History of Destructionin special session) and the Russian Kirill Serebrennikov, who now lives in Berlin, will open Avignon and will come before that to present in Cannes Tchaikovsky’s Wife in competition.

The festival teams saw 2,200 films and selected around fifty for their selection. We are still waiting for some announcements by mid-May for a 75th anniversary at the fairly exciting competition. We are not surprised to find filmmakers already palmed with gold
: the Japanese Hirokazu Kore-eda (Broker), the Romanian Cristian Mungiu (MRI), Swede Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness) and the Belgians Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Tori and Lokita). We are already pawing at the new releases of James Gray (Armageddon Time) and David Cronenberg (Crimes of The Futurewith Léa Seydoux, Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen).

French sideArnaud Desplechin is currently accompanied by Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (The Almond Trees) and Claire Denis (Stars at Noon).

The red carpet will be overheated when it comes to welcoming the teams of certain event screenings
: Romain Duris and Bérénice Béjo in Z (like Z) by Michel Hazanavicius, a zombie film which will be the opening; Vincent Lacoste, Anaïs Demoustier and Gilles Lellouche in Smoking makes you cough by Quentin Dupieux; Jean Dujardin and Sandrine Kiberlain in November by Cédric Jimenez (the investigation following the November 2015 attacks); Pierre Niney and Isabelle Adjani in Masquerade« police comedy from Nice by Nicolas Bedos.
