Canine and Feline Anti-Rabies Vaccination Day: Free Vaccinations in Mexico City to Prevent Rabies Outbreak

The Government of Mexico City started on Tuesday the Canine and Feline Anti-Rabies Vaccination Day where more than 1.2 million doses are estimated to be applied free of charge with the aim that the capital continues without registering cases of rabies in companion animals and humans.

The start of the day occurred in the Iztapalapa mayor’s office, but the Mexico City Ministry of Health will vaccinate the animals in 432 health centers, 1,200 modules located in public spaces such as markets and parks and will also display 1,441 brigades that will visit the colonies of the 16 municipalities.

The day will last until July 15, for which the authorities invited the residents of the capital to vaccinate their pets.

Jorge Ochoa, director of the Public Health Services, indicated that since 1997 in Mexico City there are no reported cases of rabies in humans, while since 2011 there have been no infections in dogs and cats.

However, in other entities recently there have been cases of rabies infections in humans. And he mentioned the case of a minor in Nayarit who was bitten by a cat and the case of two minors in Oaxaca who were bitten by a bat.

He indicated that by vaccinating Pets also protect people.

“We have to guarantee that this virus is not introduced into the city, right now we are free of the virus, it is not circulating in animals, even if our animals were bitten by any animal, our pets would not be susceptible to being infected thanks to the fact that they are protected by This vaccination, finally, the most important thing is the protection against human rabies, that our animals do not have the virus and that way we are also protected”, he said.

Ochoa warned that groups of people take advantage of the vaccination day to pose as official brigades and sell the vaccine and other treatments such as dewormers and medicines against distemper.

He stressed that this government program is free and the personnel is duly identified.

“The most important thing is that they know that the vaccine applied by the Ministry of Health is free, those who are visiting house to house, who sometimes pose as health personnel, charge for the vaccine or the deworming treatment they give or offer other types of vaccines such as against distemper, then, simply and simply if they are offering other services in addition to the vaccine, they are apocryphal,” he said.
