REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Symptoms cancer not always easy to spot. However, there is one sign that can indicate a deadly condition and that can appear at night.
“Lots cancer symptoms may appear worse at night,” said Dr Deborah Lee of Dr Fox Online Pharmacy, as quoted from the page ExpressMonday (1/5/2023).
There is some evidence that cancer cells can grow faster overnight, though more research is needed. The doctor explained that the most common symptom so far was sleep hyperhidrosis.
Sleep hyperhidrosis or night sweats is a warning sign. According to Dr Lee, this is a potentially serious symptom that could mean there is a significant underlying disease.
This sweating is often so severe that it wets the sheets, requiring the sufferer to get up and shower and change the bedding. Dr Lee explains you shouldn’t take night sweats for granted especially if they’re persistent (occurring most nights or more than once a night). In addition, be alert if night sweats are accompanied by fever.
Also be careful if night sweats wake you from sleep. So bad, you will be soaked and have to get up from the place sleep to shower and change sheets.
While kidney, liver, and ovarian cancer may present with this sign, sleep hyperhidrosis are symptoms of leukemia (blood cancer) and lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system).
“Other associated symptoms are fever, unexplained weight loss, itchy skin and fatigue,” said Dr. Lee.
Although night sweats are considered a sign of cancer, they may not necessarily indicate a fatal condition.” There are many other causes of night sweats that are not due to cancer, the most common of which are hot flushes menopause and night sweats, for example,” said Dr. Lee.
However, Dr Lee stressed it is important to check persistent and unusual symptoms with a doctor. The good news is that there are many measures that can prevent night sweats from disrupting your sleep.
