“Lebanon Debate”
Commenting on the sit-in carried out today by cancer patients in front of the government palace, the head of the Lebanese Pharmacists Syndicate, Joe Salloum, considered that what is being committed today against cancer patients and incurable diseases in Lebanon is tantamount to genocide.
He explained in an interview with “Lebanon Diet” that, “There are more than 30,000 patients in Lebanon who are divided between cancerous diseases and incurable diseases. They cannot obtain medicine for months, especially since they cannot obtain unsubsidized medicines due to their very high cost, which… The patient is forced to stop his treatment, and thus it is as if the state is telling the patient “a spirit of death.”
He asked: “What is the difference between withholding medicine from a patient? Or killing him? This question is for those concerned. When the state stops subsidizing the medicine and does not provide it in the market, or when it gives the patient a medicine of lower quality and effectiveness, this is tantamount to genocide practiced against all patients.” Cancer and incurable diseases in Lebanon.
He stressed that “these patients have the right to receive their treatment,” pointing out that “the funds required annually to support and secure all medicines for patients with cancer and incurable diseases do not exceed $360 million annually, and this amount is considered very small, compared to conferences that took place regarding Lebanon, such as Paris 1 conference and others.
While he called on “state officials to immediately call for an international donor conference, the least of the authorities’ duties is to place this humanitarian and moral issue at the top of all priorities, and to arouse the global conscience to help cancer and incurable disease patients in Lebanon.”
Salloum concluded by saying: “Any delay practiced by the authority is tantamount to killing these patients, so they must call for the conference today before tomorrow.”
