Dear reader
I have cancer. prostate cancer. I was diagnosed three weeks ago. Can happen, especially with a man who is already (or only) 57. I try to give it a place. Some days it works better than others. That’s how life goes.
There is, after various investigations, a “treatment plan”. The prostate and surrounding lymph nodes must be removed.
I consider myself lucky that I live in Belgium and not in India or America. Our healthcare is world class and it won’t bankrupt me. The government has a lot of money left for my health and I am extremely grateful for that.
The doctors who treat me, I have nothing but very positive experiences with them.
The operation is urgent, as is the case with life-threatening illnesses.
Today I was told that the surgery may not take place at the earliest in January. Since the previous corona wave, there is still a “catching up” going on. The agendas are fully booked, perhaps with patients for whom it is even more urgent. Understandably, I am no more important than other patients waiting their turn.
The fourth corona wave makes the situation even more dire.
I hear that half of the covid patients in intensive care are not vaccinated. 50 percent of available beds in intensive care are occupied by a minority of 10 percent of the population. That is a fact that is objectively and statistically established.
That is why I have a question for all those who have not been vaccinated or are not planning to. Do you realize that you are part of a group responsible for delaying my treatment and that of countless other patients? And do you realize that – sorry for the drama – this could be a matter of life or death for me and them?
Sincerely
Chris Van den Abeele
