The coronavirus contingency is generating an under-registration of cancer diagnoses, which represents a threat to the lives of people who, without knowing it, have the disease.
It is estimated that the cases detected in 2020 by the Ministry of Health of the federal government are only a part of the real ones, as many people continue to fear going to hospitals where they could have a timely detection.
The fear of a covid contagion, added to the surgical interventions and treatments postponed in federal institutions as a result of the health emergency that began in March of last year, impact the fight against cancer, says Lupita Ostos Villarreal, president of the Alliance against Breast cancer
“The federal government says that breast cancer has decreased, what happens is that it has given priority to covid and cancer has been stopped, which should also be a priority because life is at stake. However, it has suspended operations and postponed treatments and consultations, there are many patients on the waiting list with the illusion of living, everything is urgent, ”he says.
The Epidemiological Bulletin of the federal Ministry of Health indicates that in 2020, 269 cases of breast cancer were detected in Tamaulipas, three of them in men; However, the previous year, 2019, closed with a total of 573.
Regarding uterine cancer, the decrease in diagnoses was from 135 registrations in 2019 to 61 in 2020, while prostate cancer decreased from 3,112 to 2,142 respectively.
This February 4, World Cancer Day was commemorated, the date on which the civil association called for reflection and did not hesitate to go for mammograms, pap smears and other timely detection tests.
“Breast and uterine cancer is a personal responsibility to detect it early; I see federal data that breast cancer is going down, make no mistake, nothing is going down, what happens is that there is fear of going to be checked and that is why they have not detected more cases.
