Cancellation of Open Water Swimming Championships in Paris Due to River Pollution

Today, heavy rains in Paris led to the suspension of the men’s and women’s open water swimming world championships, which were scheduled to take place on Sunday in the Seine, due to pollution in the river water.

This competition was the fourth in the Swimming World Cup, with a competition for women and another for men, both for a distance of 10 km. It was also a test for the Olympic competitions that will be held within a year in the same location.

The French Swimming Federation explained that the competitions were canceled because the water quality in the Seine River was still below acceptable standards.

Water quality falls below required standards when rains cause untreated waste to flow into the Seine.

Games organizers hope the Seine will be better prepared in 2024, when the Olympics begin. The International Swimming Federation said that the existence of alternative contingency plans in 2024 is necessary. The Olympic Committee indicated that the new infrastructure will be ready by the summer of 2024, and it should guarantee water quality that allows swimming in the Seine.

Paris saw a severe deterioration in the quality of its river, due to sewage upstream, and the sanitation demands of a growing population.

And banned swimming in the Seine for a century because of the filth of the water, but with the approach of the Olympic Games a year later, Paris began cleaning the river to witness the return of swimmers and divers to it. Especially since on Friday the organizers had to prevent training in the river for the same reason.
