In today’s summary of the war in Ukraine, the British military intelligence draws attention to the upcoming May 9 in Russia, which is traditionally the most pompous holiday in the country.
Parades and celebrations on occasion Victory Day has been canceled across Russia for security reasons.
Six Russian regions and the occupied Crimea canceled the celebrations entirely, and in another 21 cities there will be no parade. Elsewhere in the country, events on the occasion of May 9 are limited.
In Moscow, the parade will probably take place, but on a much smaller scale than usual. The traditional reception at the Kremlin afterwards, to which Vladimir Putin usually invites high-ranking guests, military personnel and veterans, has also been cancelled. It was last held in 2019, before the pandemic.
March of the “Immortal Regiment” there will be neither in Moscow nor in many other Russian cities.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence the drone attack on the Kremlin days before May 9 she showed how vulnerable Russia is and has instilled in the Russian leadership fears for its security during the mass celebrations.
It is also possible that the decision to cancel the celebrations was made by the Russian authorities, considering the possibility for protests and other forms of popular discontent in connection with the war in Ukraine.
Did Ukraine try to kill Putin?
If the attack is real, it could heighten Vladimir Putin’s paranoia. And anyway, the Russian president applies a very strict routine, subject to the fear of death
