More than seventy professionals from the different basic health areas of Tenerife and patients attended the conference held this Thursday at the headquarters of the Tenerife Primary Care Management. In the activity, focused on the training of trainers, the essence and content of the Canary Islands School for Patients and its relevance in the family and community setting were addressed in a participatory manner
The Primary Care Management of Tenerife, attached to the Ministry of Health, and the Canary Islands School of Patients held a meeting last Thursday to restart the activity on the island of this participatory program, which has resumed its workshops and meetings in all the islands after the cessation of activity due to the covid-19 pandemic.
The Canarian Patient School is an initiative of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) in which it is the patients themselves who, advised by health professionals, guide other patients with the same pathology, exchanging experiences and advising and helping them with their process. of health.
This project is part of a much broader strategy that includes a set of humanization policies incorporated into the public health system as a result of the ‘Commitment to Improve Public Health in the Canary Islands’, signed in December 2017 by the Ministry of Health and the Canary Islands Health Service, together with patient associations.
The meeting, held this Thursday in the auditorium of the Tenerife Primary Care Management headquarters, was attended by more than seventy professionals from the different basic health areas of Tenerife, as well as active participating patients assigned to different categories of this program .
The training day was focused on the training of trainers, both professionals and patients, and was given by Daniel López, director of the Canary Islands School of Patients. In a participatory manner, the attendees addressed the essence and content of the Canary Islands School for Patients and its relevance in the current family and community scenario related to the pathologies included in the activity.
Likewise, the importance in Health Education of actions through the relationship between equals was highlighted, such as those that this program directs, in addition to promoting skills in health personnel to facilitate and moderate meetings in workshops with patients and the activation of proactive participants.
Active patients
The Canarian Patient School is aimed at promoting the active patient profile and is developed through workshops where, in small groups of patients, family members and caregivers, the exchange of knowledge is facilitated and skills are acquired between people who share the experience of a chronic disease in order to improve their quality of life.
The main objective is to support and train the people who attend the workshops to improve their skills, motivation and confidence to manage the symptoms of chronic disease; encourage healthier lifestyles; improve health outcomes; better comply with recommendations and treatments; improve communication with health professionals and use health resources more efficiently.
The Canary Islands School of Patients holds workshops on all the islands and they address chronic diseases with a special incidence such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), breast cancer, heart failure, diabetes and chronic kidney disease. Specific training sessions for caregivers of people with chronic diseases are also included to instruct them in the care of these patients.
Any person suffering from a chronic disease can participate in this project, as well as caregivers and relatives of patients who want to learn techniques and acquire skills to properly manage the disease and achieve better levels of health and quality of life.
