The Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo of La Gomera have announced, this Thursday, the materialization of an agreement for the improvement of the educational infrastructure of the island, with the aim of co-financing projects of adaptation in the network of centers of the six municipalities.
For the counselor, Poli Suárez, “this is magnificent news that is in line with the line of work that we are committed to from the Ministry: strengthening the relationship and commitment with local administrations, through the FECAM and the FECAI, to that, together, we improve the education of the islands, and, in particular, the state of the infrastructure”.
For his part, the president, Casimiro Curbelo, explained that in this year there is a forecast to materialize a dozen projects in all the municipalities and, he announced, that those made by the management of the centers, as well as by the own town councils, in order to harmonize them all in a single document with a financial record. “It is a mechanism that will make us gain in agility and response to situations that have lasted too long, and that from the Cabildo, even though we are not competent in the matter, we want to respond,” he stated.
He specified the initial forecast of an investment that will exceed one million euros, but that could be expanded once the final document with all the proposals is available, “to go hand in hand with the Ministry of Education, the town councils and the educational centers, because The final objective is to improve the educational quality and the benefits of these infrastructures,” he stated.
Curbelo and Suárez held a meeting in the Cabildo with the mayors of the island in which they also reported that, in the coming weeks, Infrastructure and Sports technicians from the Regional Ministry will visit the Gomero schools to study their deficiencies in situ, calculate exactly the financing they need, and streamline the procedures to resolve them.

Before their meeting with the mayors, the councilor and president met with the directors of the centers on the island, within a “strategy of direct contact and listening” with the entire educational community of the archipelago, as Suárez pointed out, who went to La Gomera with most of the team.
Thus, along with the insular director, Elena Carballo, the vice-ministers of Education and of Physical Activity and Sports, José Manuel Cabrera and Ángel Sabroso, respectively, and the general directors of Personnel and Teacher Training also attended this meeting; Organization of Teachings, Inclusion and Innovation; Administration of Centers, Schooling and Complementary Services; Educational Infrastructure and Equipment; Professional Qualifications and Physical Activity and Sports, Mónica Ramírez, David Pablos, Carolina León, Iván González, Alfredo Espinosa and José Francisco Pérez, respectively.
