The eruption of the volcano in the Kumbre Vyhe Nature Park has been going on for a week now, and on Friday the volcano’s activity increased again, which led to the cancellation of flights by several airlines. On Saturday, Aena announced the closure of the entire airport.
About 6,200 people have been evacuated since the eruption began.
To date, 461 buildings have been destroyed in the eruption and lava has covered more than 210 hectares.
No one has been injured in the eruption, but the damage to property is enormous.
Angel Victor Torress, head of the Canary Islands’ regional government, estimates that the damage will amount to well over 400 million euros.
It is not clear at this time how long the volcanic eruption that will be in Palma for the first time in 50 years will continue.
