Canaries, in La Palma giant lava fountain after the collapse of the crater

Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma is more active than ever and a new ‘giant lava fountain’ has leaked out of the volcano today, following the partial collapse of the crater. This was reported by the Canary Islands Institute of Volcanology. “We are in a new phase, which is much more intense,” Pedro Hernandez, a researcher at the institute, told public broadcaster Rtve. The eruption has raised a cloud of ash on the island and residents are watching to see which direction the new lava flow will take as authorities prepare to order any further evacuations. So far the rapid evacuations have avoided victims of the eruption, even if the lava has totally or partially destroyed over 2 thousand buildings, mostly houses, covering an area of over 900 hectares. In the past five weeks, around 7,500 of the island’s 85,500 inhabitants have been forced to leave their homes
