Canal Bréxit resumes meetings and tries to solve problems of Spanish exports to England

This week a new meeting of the Brexit Channel will take place, a collaborative body between the administration and the export sectors, promoted by the Secretary of State for Commerce, to identify and try to solve the difficulties of trade with England after the entry of Brexit.

In the fruit and vegetable sector, he said FEPEX, exports to this country maintain a fluid rhythm, with 862,372 tons exported in the first half, 3% less than in the same period of 2020 and 1,276 million euros, 10% more

According to FEPEX, fruit and vegetable exporters have assumed, since January 1, 2021, new customs requirements established by England as a result of their departure from the EU, which have been set in three phases.

At the beginning of January this year, Community fresh fruit and vegetable exports must be accompanied by a customs declaration (SAD) and a certificate of compliance with marketing standards.

FEPEX indicated that “the second phase, which was initially going to begin to be applied in April of this year and has been postponed to January 1, 2022 and with regard to the generality of fresh fruits and vegetables, shipments must also go accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate and there will be documentary identity and physical checks at the point of arrival in England ”.

In the third phase, which will begin in March 2022, the monitoring of the entry of Community goods by England will be increased, also carrying out entry controls by authorized Phytosanitary Control Points (PCF), which generates great concern in the sector grouped in FEPEX, due to the complexity and slowdown in exports that these controls may entail and due to the high level of shipments to England, the third destination for Spanish fruit and vegetable exports.

Fruit exports increase 22% in June and leave behind months of falls

Regarding the role that Spain has as an exporter of fruits and vegetables, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes, processed the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables of Spain (Fepex) the fruit exports in June 2021 totaled 846,283 tonnes, a figure that represented an increase of 22% and a value of 962 million euros.

According to Fepex, the main increases were led by strawberries with 16,841 tons (+ 54%), and blueberries 22,246 tons (+ 132%). Added to this were watermelon with 266,597 tons (+ 30%), and stone fruit, with the exception of peach (peach) and apricot, which continue to be affected by the adverse weather conditions suffered in previous months.

Nectarine reached 76,560 tn (+ 13%), plum 15,530 tn (+ 20%) and cherry 24,140 tn with a strong increase (+ 150%) that recovered after the fall suffered in 2020.

In the case of vegetables, exports fell by 4% in volume compared to the same period of the previous year, with 327,234 tons, however, in value it grew by 2% to 329 million euros.

Tomato sales stood at 25,095 tons (+ 8%), with a value of 35.4 million euros (+ 15%), peppers with 38,616 tons (+ 13%) and 57.4 million (+ 8%), carrots with 28,369 tons (+ 27%) and 14.7 million euros (+ 28%), lettuce with 19,281 tons (+ 8%) and 22.3 million euros (+ 31%) and cabbages with 23,083 tons (+ 30%) and 25.9 million (-1%).

The entity explained that “the data for the month of June show a positive result of the value obtained by the whole of fruit and vegetable exports, but reflect disparate situations derived in part from the damages suffered by adverse weather conditions in some months, and by the strong impact of imports from third countries, especially Morocco, in the Community markets that affects an increasing number of products, without the measures provided for in the Association Agreements being applied to alleviate the damage to Community producers “
