Virginia Beach welcomed 14.1 million visitors in 2023. Canadians accounted for the largest number of international visitors, accounting for 45% of the foreign tourism market, according to a new study by the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau (VBCVB).
Canadian travelers spent nearly $38 million, which exceeds the combined spending of visitors from the following four largest international markets:
- the United Kingdom
- India
- Germany
- Turkey
Known for its 38 miles of sandy beaches, dynamic dining, craft beer and rich history, Virginia Beach has seen a significant boom in international tourism, according to the VBCVB.
The study confirmed that Virginia Beach’s growth in 2023 was significant, with total international visits increasing by 68%, 10% less than in 2019.
This year, the city is expected to achieve an almost complete recovery in visitor numbers, and sustainable growth is predicted for years to come.
“We are delighted to welcome so many Canadian visitors,” said Nancy Helman, director of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. Our recent economic impact study highlights Virginia Beach’s incredible appeal as a tourist destination. It’s a testament to the diversity of experiences we offer and the hard work of our tourism industry. »
While the city’s expansive waterfront and outdoor amenities have been major draws, Virginia Beach’s strategic investment in sporting events and festivals has also paid off.
Travel for entertainment, sports and cultural attractions have been additional motivators, making Virginia Beach an increasingly vibrant destination.
“These results illustrate not only the vitality of our tourism sector, but also the deep connections our visitors have with Virginia Beach,” added Ms. Helman.
“More and more people are choosing to visit our beloved city, and for those lucky enough to call Virginia Beach home, we are seeing a direct impact on our local economy. This growth reinforces our commitment to enhancing the visitor experience and supporting the prosperity of our community.”
The analysis, focused on Virginia Beach visitor spending in 2023, was conducted by Tourism Economics, a division of Oxford Economics, using a range of local and national data and statistical tools.
