Canadians Embrace Proactive Shopping Techniques to Save on Christmas Gifts, Survey Finds

After several months of facing the rising cost of living, a large majority of Canadians believe that there is no small savings even for Christmas gifts and are ready to hunt for deals to be able to offer the perfect present.

At least that’s what a survey conducted by the Retail Council of Canada and the Léger firm published Wednesday indicated.

Thus, nearly 88% of respondents want to adopt proactive shopping techniques rather than waiting until the last minute for their gifts in order to avoid too big a hole in their wallet.

More than half (52%) will therefore mainly target items that are on sale, while 41% plan to shop in advance and 40% do not want to go beyond the budget they have set.

Retailers will therefore have to take these elements into consideration if they wish to attract customers, because 66% of them will choose commerce depending on sales or promotions.

Monitored promotional days

A sign that the search for good deals is not about to stop, promotional days are increasingly popular with Canadians who sometimes prefer to postpone their purchases to take advantage of these discounts.

For example, 40% of respondents plan to purchase on Black Friday, which represents an increase of 12% compared to 2022.

Cyber Monday and Boxing Day sales are also very popular, with 37% and 32% of purchasing intentions respectively. In 2022, only 21% of Canadians waited until Cyber Monday for their holiday shopping and 18% postponed it until after Christmas.

Quebecers spend less

According to this survey, Canadian consumers are ready to spend $898 on average during this holiday season. This is an increase compared to last year when the average was $782.

However, Quebecers’ spending is likely to be less significant since they are prepared to pay $663 on average. The majority of the budget will be reserved for the reception, with expenses for food and alcohol.

The survey was conducted among 2,500 Canadians over the age of 18 between August 14 and 23, 2023.
