In the same month, I sent from Canada to the White House a letter addressed to Trump containing the poison and other letters containing poison to eight law enforcement officials in the state of Texas.
On Thursday, a US court sentenced a 55-year-old woman of French and Canadian citizenship to 22 years in prison for sending a letter in 2020 to then-US President Donald Trump containing the highly toxic substance ricin.
Announcement
Pascale Ferrier pleaded guilty in January to violating a ban on the possession or use of banned biological weapons.
Ferrier admitted that she extracted ricin, a highly toxic plant protein, from castor bean seeds at her home in Quebec in September 2020.
In the same month, a letter addressed to Trump containing the poison was sent from Canada to the White House, and other letters containing poison were sent to eight law enforcement officials in the state of Texas.
Her letter to Trump contained “threatening language” and called on him to withdraw from the upcoming elections, according to the US Department of Justice.
“I found a new name for you: ‘Ugly Tyrannical Clown’ Hope you like it,” the letter read.
Around the time she sent her message, Ferrier suggested on Twitter that someone should “shoot Trump in the face”.
Threatening the President of the United States is a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.
In 2019, Ferrier was arrested in Texas for about 10 weeks for gun possession, the Department of Justice said, and it sparked a grudge against the law enforcement officials she eventually sent the letters to.
No one was harmed by the content of the toxic messages. All messages to the White House pass through a screening facility in suburban Washington, one of the aims of which is to detect threats.
After sending the letters, Ferrier attempted to enter the United States through an official crossing in Buffalo, N.Y., on September 20, 2020.
She was arrested there and authorities found a gun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in her car, according to the Justice Department.
