Canadian team goes on strike, cancels friendly

The international friendly against Panama is part of Canada’s preparation for the World Cup, competition in which Canada guaranteed a place, and which the country has not played in 36 years.

The Canadian team issued a note in which it apologizes to its fans for the cancellation of the match, as well as to the federation, players, coaching staff, staff and Panama fans.

The published letter also explains the reasons for not participating in the game. Among other items, the main requirements are:

• A leadership that can optimize the positive moment of the selection and that generate revenue from sponsorships, for the evolution of the sport in the country;
• An equitable distribution of income with the women’s team, including the same percentage under the prizes for participation in the World Cup in which it will compete;
• Development of the country’s women’s soccer league;
• Participation awards that include 40% of the proceeds from participation in the 2022 World Cup;
• Inclusion of more former players and players in the structure of Canada Soccer.
