Canadian Study Shows Link Between Smoking and Male Hair Loss: Meta-Analysis

[Voice of Hope February 16, 2024]When they reach middle age, many men worry about hair loss and baldness.

A Canadian study shows that male smokers are more likely to suffer from androgenic alopecia than non-smokers.

Moreover, researchers also found that men who smoked at least 10 cigarettes a day had a higher risk of hair loss than those who smoked less.

In this study, researchers conducted a meta-analysis of eight observational studies.

A pooled analysis of six studies showed that men who had ever smoked had a 1.8 times higher risk of androgenic alopecia than other men.

An analysis of two of the studies showed that men who smoked ≥10 cigarettes a day had a 30% increased risk of androgenic alopecia compared with men who smoked less than 10 cigarettes a day.

Another meta-analysis of four studies found that compared with never smokers, smokers had a 30% increased risk of progression from mild to more severe androgenetic alopecia; two other studies showed that Progression was independent of smoking intensity (smoking 20 cigarettes per day or smoking ≥20 cigarettes per day).

However, the researchers pointed out that although smoking has not been found to be unrelated to male androgenic alopecia, there may be a positive relationship, and it can be found through more powerful statistics.

Some dermatologists pointed out that smoking will affect the growth cycle of hair follicles and fiber pigmentation. The prevalence of hair loss and premature graying of hair among smokers is higher than that among non-smokers.
