Canadian returns 84 archaeological pieces to Mexico

Mexico City. A Canadian citizen returned 84 archaeological pieces to Mexico, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported this Saturday.

These are objects, some more than 2 thousand years old, from various civilizations of the preclassic Mesoamerican period. The collection was kept by the Princeton University Museum of Arts, in New Jersey, United States.

The Consulate of Mexico in Montreal, representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in the ceremony of restitution of the pieces, at the facilities of the department of the University of Montreal.

When the Princeton University Museum returned the collection to Canadian citizen Jacques Mailhot, he expressed to the Mexican consulate “his desire to return them to Mexico, recognizing their cultural importance and the value they represent for the national heritage,” the SRE noted in the social networks.

He added that the Mexican government “will continue to strengthen the strategy for the protection and conservation of national heritage” with legal strategies to combat illicit trafficking in cultural heritage. It will also continue to promote dialogue with museums and academic institutions around the world, seeking the restitution of national heritage.
