Canadian rapper Tory Lanez was found guilty in December of firing a semi-automatic handgun and hitting fellow artist Megan in the feet.
The episode happened after the two had been to a party together in July 2020, at Kylie Jenner’s house in Hollywood.
In Los Angeles, the rap star was sentenced on Tuesday:
He is sentenced to ten years in prison, reports American media, including AP.
– If I could change the series of events that night and change them, I would have done it, Lanez said in court.
– The victim was my friend. The victim is someone I still care about today.
Lanez has been in prison since the conviction.
The rapper was convicted before Christmas on three counts:
Assault with a semi-automatic firearm Possession of a loaded and unregistered firearm in a vehicle Grossly negligent discharge of a firearm
The sentence was almost 23 years in prison. The prosecution asked for 13 years in prison.
They emphasized that, in addition to the shooting, Tory Lanez had also posted messages about the case in social media, which led to massive incitement by Megan Thee Stallion.
His defenders asked the court to give him probation and rehabilitation for substance abuse.
“Doubtful at best”
According to the news agency AP the defenders have referred to the evidence as “dubious at best”, and the fact that Tory Lanez should not have shown remorse is, according to them, connected to this.
In the lawsuit, Megan Thee Stallion claimed that Tory Lanez shot at her heels and yelled for her to dance, after she left the car they were in together.
She first told the police that she had cut herself on glass. At the hospital, the doctors found bullet fragments that had to be surgically removed.
Several weeks after the incident, she named Tory Lanez as the perpetrator, on Instagram. In court, she said that she is still struggling with the after-effects.
The sentencing process started on Monday, but did not get to the point where the decision was made known.
In court on Monday, a letter from Megan Thee Stallion was read out, in which she advocated a severe punishment, and explained that she has not had a single peaceful day since the shooting incident three years ago.
Tory Lanez’s father, the priest Sonstar Peterson, who caused a stir in court when his son was sentenced in December, for his part asked the judge to show mercy.
So did rapper Iggy Azalea. In a letter, she asks the judge to land on a sentence that is “developmental, not life-destroying”.
Tory Lanez has had six Top 10 albums in the US. Megan Thee Stallion has topped the US singles chart with ‘Savage’ and ‘WAP’, alongside Beyoncé and Cardi B respectively.
