Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Speaks Out About Separation and Focuses on His Children and the Future

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday he is now focused on his children and the future, in his first comments since announcing his separation from wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau this month.

Trudeau and his wife returned from a family vacation in the Pacific region of British Columbia.

On August 2, Trudeau’s office said he and his wife had signed a legal separation agreement, but he had not previously spoken about it publicly.

“I had 10 days with the family (which was a really good opportunity) to focus on the kids and on living together and getting on with life,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau declined to answer a question about how he feels now and did not explain any details about the separation, thanking those who supported him and stressing the need for continued privacy.

“I really want to thank Canadians for being so generous in respecting our privacy,” Trudeau added.

Trudeau, 51, and Sophie, 48, married in May 2005 and have three children, Zeviar, 15, Ella-Grace, 14, and Hadrian, 9.

They had previously spoken openly about the problems facing their relationship and had not appeared much in public events during the past years.
