Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau loses support from partner

Toronto (Canada) (EFE).- The social-democratic New Democratic Party (NPD) announced on Wednesday that it will stop supporting the ruling Liberal Party of Canada (PLC) in Parliament, which puts the survival of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government at risk.

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh announced the end of the agreement, which has allowed Trudeau to govern since the last national election in 2021, in a video distributed via social media.

Singh accused Trudeau of constantly giving in to “corporate greed.”

“The Liberals have abandoned the people. They do not deserve another chance from Canadians,” Singh said.

The announcement comes just days after opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, a conservative, called on Singh to withdraw his support for Trudeau and force the country into early elections.

Trudeau’s position ahead of the upcoming elections

The next general election is scheduled for October 2025 and polls show the Conservative Party leading the Liberals by 18 percentage points with 43% of voting intention versus 25% for Trudeau and the Liberal Party. Voting intention for the NDP is 15%.

The Liberal Party won the 2021 elections by obtaining 160 of the 338 seats in the lower house of Parliament. The Conservative Party won 119 seats, the sovereigntist Bloc Québécois (BQ) 32 and the NPD 25.

Under Canada’s parliamentary system, the government must resign and dissolve Parliament if it loses a vote considered a “confidence vote,” such as one on budgetary policies.

After the election, Trudeau and Singh reached an agreement whereby the Social Democrats would support the Liberals in the House of Representatives in a confidence vote.

The end of the agreement means Trudeau can no longer be sure that the NDP will support the government in the event of a vote of confidence or a motion of no confidence.
