Canadian PM’s stance on a Muslim family being hit by a truck

A Muslim family in Canada was hit by a truck.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, OTTAWA — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his sadness at the events that befell a Muslim family in London, Ontario. A truck deliberately hit five Muslim families, four of whom died.

“I am horrified by the news from London, Ontario. To the loved ones of those who were terrorized by hatred (Sunday) yesterday, we are here for you,” tweet Prime Minister, quoted from Anadolu Agency, Tuesday (8/6).

Trudeau also stated that Islamophobia has no place in his country. The attack on Muslims, according to him, is despicable.

“Islamophobia has no place in our community. This hatred is dangerous and reprehensible, and it must stop,” he stressed.

Of the incident, only a 9 year old boy survived. Now, the little boy is still being treated in hospital for serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

“We are also here for the child who is still in the hospital, our hearts are for you, and you will be in our protection when you recover,” said Trudeau’s great -grandson.

Police, at the request of the family, will not release the names of the victims. Police only said the victims who died were two women aged 74 and 44 years, then a 46-year-old man, and a 15-year-old girl. The incident occurred on Sunday (6/6) evening at approximately 20:40 local time.

Police said the perpetrator was apprehended, about seven kilometers (4.3 miles) from the scene. The perpetrator, Nathaniel Veltman, 20, has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

“There is evidence this was a premeditated act and the family was targeted because of their Muslim faith,” London Police Detective Inspector Paul Waight told a news conference.

At Monday’s virtual press conference, the Mayor of London also condemned the crime. “Let me be clear, this is a mass murder perpetrated against Muslims, against the citizens of London, and is rooted in unspeakable hatred,” Mayor Ed Holder said.

London is a city of about 405,000 people, about 200 km (124 miles) southwest of Toronto. Police said the family was strolling in and stopped to cross at an intersection when the truck crossed the sidewalk and hit them.
