Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie announced their separation through a statement delivered by the government office on Wednesday (2/8). The two have also signed a legal agreement.
The divorce marks the end of Trudeau and Sophie’s 18-year marriage. From this marriage, the two had three children.
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps in relation to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to be,” said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office of Canada.
Trudeau is currently 51 years old, while Sophie is 48 years old. They married in late May 2005. The two also agreed to raise their three children together.
“They remain a close family and Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their children in a safe, loving and collaborative environment,” the statement said.
“The family will be vacationing together, starting next week,” the statement continued.
Justin Trudeau himself has also announced his separation from Sophie through his personal Instagram account @justinpjtrudeau. According to Trudeau, he and Sophie had to make a tough decision to separate.
“Hello everyone, Sophie and I want to convey the fact that after having meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,” wrote a photo upload containing a message from Justin Trudeau’s personal Instagram account,@justinpjtrudeau.
“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for all that we have built and will continue to build. For the sake of the children’s well-being, we ask that you respect our privacy and theirs. Thank you. “
