Canadian junior hockey players won the world title for the 20th time.
Halfway through the last third the Canadians still had a two-goal lead, but the hosts did not defend it, as the Czechs scored two goals in one minute and equalised. In the 7th minute of extra time, Dylan Genter’s shot gave Canada the victory.
Canadian Conor Bedar became the tournament’s most effective hockey player, who scored nine goals and 14 assists. Recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), Bedar is the fourth leading hockey player all-time in World Junior Championship history.
The two finalists had previously met at the beginning of the group stage, where the Czechs lost to the Canadian team (5:2).
The bronze medals were taken by young hockey players from the USA, who beat the Swedish national team 8:7 in overtime in a very productive and eventful match. With the winning goal in extra time, Chaz Luces stood out, for whom it was the third goal of the match.
It has already been announced that young Latvians will return from Canada with protected rights to play in the elite group also in the next championship and would take 9th place in the 10-team competition.
The next Under-20 World Championship will be held in the Swedish city of Gothenburg from 26 December to 5 January. The Latvian national team will face Canada, Sweden, Finland and Germany in the group stage.
