(CNN) — A Canadian woman has died while hiking in Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, the National Park Service (NPS) reported.
Melanie Goodine, 41, was walking outside the canyon along the Bright Angel Trail near the Three-Mile Resthouse Thursday when authorities received a report that she was in distress, the NPS said in a news release.
“Shortly thereafter, the hiker became unresponsive and bystanders began CPR,” the statement said. “National Park Service (NPS) search and rescue personnel responded and assisted with resuscitation efforts. All attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.”
Goodine was leaving the canyon after hiking to the Colorado River earlier that day.
Shade temperatures in the area where Goodine was walking peaked at around 35 to 40 degrees Celsius on Thursday, Joelle Baird, a spokeswoman for Grand Canyon National Park, told CNN. Depending on the trail taken, the path Goodine traveled can be up to 20 miles round trip.

“The NPS does not recommend walking from the rim to the river and back in one day,” their statement read.
The NPS is currently conducting an investigation into the incident in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
“Before heading down the trail, hikers are strongly encouraged to read the Hiking Tips page and check the Trail Updates and Closures page for current information on conditions inside the canyon,” the release says.
“All visitors to the Grand Canyon should be sure to drink plenty of fluids, rest in the shade during the heat of the day, watch for signs of distress in fellow travelers, and dress appropriately for the weather, including light-colored clothing and baggy”.
