Hangzhou Net Release time: 2023-09-08 13:59

CCTV News Client News Canadian Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson said on the 7th local time that Canada’s warm and dry weather in September may trigger new forest fires, and some existing forest fires may even continue to burn into the winter.

Canada is experiencing its worst wildfires in history. According to Reuters, this year’s forest fire season is not yet over, and the cumulative area burned has exceeded 166,000 square kilometers, more than twice Canada’s historical record. As of the 7th, there were still more than 1,000 forest fires burning across Canada, of which about 650 were out of control.

This year, forest fires have affected almost all 13 provinces and territories in Canada, forcing large numbers of people to evacuate. Local governments requested assistance from the federal government or other countries to help put out the fires.

Wilkinson said that despite temperatures starting to drop in autumn, “the current warm and dry weather could spark new fires”, according to the latest government forecasts. The risk of wildfires in September is higher from eastern Alberta, the main oil-producing region, to densely populated central Ontario.

“There is a possibility that forest fires will still be burning in September and may continue into winter.” Wilkinson said. He believes that climate change has accelerated the frequency and intensity of forest fires.
