Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly Says Receives Positive Rapid Test Result for COVID-19

Federal Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said Monday afternoon that she tested positive for COVID-19.

“In accordance with public health guidelines, I am in isolation and I will work virtually, as I have already done for several days, until time to get the results of the PCR test,” she added on Twitter.

In a few publications on the social network, Minister Joly also promoted vaccination, as well as screening and barrier measures against the disease. “Getting tested for COVID is important, but remember that it doesn’t stop you from contracting and spreading the virus. Be careful, limit your contact, and follow public health guidelines. We will overcome this ordeal together, ”she wrote.

The politician was in the UK until December 12 for a meeting between the G7 Foreign Affairs and Development ministers. The country is currently grappling with a high number of COVID-19 cases.

Other politicians have said they have been infected with the virus in the past few days. The Quebec Minister of Forests, Wildlife and Parks, Pierre Dufour, also received a positive result on Monday and he will remain in isolation.

The Minister of Education, Jean-François Roberge, revealed that he had COVID-19 last Thursday. The Minister for Transport, Chantal Rouleau, and the Minister of Finance, Eric Girard, have meanwhile been in contact with the mayoress of Montreal, Valérie Plante, who received a positive result on Saturday.

Quebec also recently suspended the public activities of ministers due to the rapid increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and the increase in hospitalizations.
