Canadian Fires Cause Concert Cancellations and Dangerous Air Quality in the US

The fires in Canada are making the air unbreathable in the United States. This Wednesday, like many other artists for several weeks, Noel Gallagher and Garbage had, for public health reasons, to cancel the concerts they planned.

Wildfires continue to ravage parts of Quebec and Ontario, and prevailing winds are once again funneling smoke into the United States. As Forbes reports, this Tuesday, June 28, Chicago had the worst air quality in the world, and Detroit the second. Levels have also deteriorated dangerously in other regions, a trend that is currently spreading eastward.

This Wednesday, June 28, Garbage and High Flying Birds, the group of Noel Gallagher, were to play in Madison, Wisconsin, but were forced to cancel their shows.

As the week progresses, air quality conditions are already certain to continue to be a health hazard across much of the eastern half of the country, and event cancellations are still expected to be high.

For several weeks now that the Canadian fires have been raging, flights, sporting events, plays, festivals and even concerts have had to be canceled. Among those events were many Broadway and Off Broadway productions — such as “Hamilton” and “Camelot” that couldn’t run due to air quality issues in New York City.

These cancellations are intended to protect the public but also the artists. The star of “Killing Eve”, Jodie Comer, for example, had, in early June, suffered from breathing difficulties during a performance of her play “Prima Facie”. She had to leave the stage after only ten minutes and be replaced by her understudy.

Air pollutants make breathing difficult. While a level of 50 or less is considered good, and a level above 300 is considered dangerous – prompting even healthy people to avoid physical exertion – the air quality index of the US Environmental Protection Agency has occasionally exceeded 400 in New York and Pennsylvania.
