Canadian defender Kadeisha Buchanan joins Chelsea for three years

LONDON — All-Canadian star defender Kadeisha Buchanan has accepted a three-year contract offer to join prestigious English soccer club Chelsea.

Buchanan joins the London women’s squad after enjoying her share of success with Olympique Lyonnais. Buchanan led the French club to five UEFA Women’s Champions League titles in six years.

The 26-year-old has nine goals in 130 appearances for Lyon.

Buchanan will wear no 26, which was last worn by legendary Chelsea player John Terry before his departure in 2017.

On the international stage, Buchanan represented Canada on 118 occasions, and helped the national team win women’s soccer gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

Buchanan, of Brampton, Ont., has been named Canada’s Most Valuable Player three times and was named a finalist in 2015 for the Ballon d’Or, which is awarded annually to the best female soccer player in the world.
