OTTAWA – A group led by Canadian businessman Michael Andlauer has agreed to buy 90 percent of the Ottawa Senators. Until now, the Canadian hockey team was owned by the Melnyk family, the daughters of the deceased former owner, Anna and Olivia, kept a 10 percent share.
According to the AP agency, both parties agreed on a sale amount of almost 1 billion dollars. “Michael represents everything we could have hoped for. That he will be involved in this process and we will get a passionate owner who is committed to Ottawa.” said club chairman and governor Sheldon Plener.
Melnyk has owned the club from Canada’s capital since 2003, when he bought it and saved it from possible bankruptcy and relocation. He died last March at the age of 62. The sale of the Senators generated a lot of interest, offers were submitted, for example, by movie star Ryan Reynolds, Canadian singer The Weeknd, and rapper Snoop Dogg.
