NU.nl regularly gives you an overview of the situation in Ukraine. This time: Canada provides more support after a visit by Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky. And the headquarters of the Russian fleet was hit by a missile.

Zelensky visited both the United States and Canada in recent days. The US had already promised more help: air defense systems, among other things.

Canada has also announced that it will provide more aid. For example, the country will help train pilots and maintenance technicians for F-16s. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he would provide long-term support to Ukraine. He promised, among other things, to provide 650 million Canadian dollars (452 million euros) in military aid over the next three years.

Dead and injured in rocket attack in Central Ukraine

The Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk, in the center of the country, was under fire on Friday. A rocket attack left one dead and at least fifteen injured. A child is among the injured.

The missile in question managed to penetrate the Ukrainian air defense system. The country says it was able to shoot down another Russian missile.

Russian fleet headquarters hit by missile

Ukraine also carried out rocket attacks on Friday. The country managed to hit the headquarters of the Russian fleet on the Black Sea in Sevastopol. A “successful attack”, says Ukraine itself.

The Russian Defense Ministry says one soldier is missing. It was first reported that the soldier had been killed, but Russia later changed this.

Images circulating on social media and Ukrainian news sites show a hole ripped through the headquarters. The plume of smoke above the building can be seen from afar.

Ukraine looks to next winter

The bleak Ukrainian winter is getting closer. Zelensky emphasizes that his troops will not be held back by cold and bad weather conditions.

Zelensky focuses specifically on the fighting around the city of Bakhmut in the east of the country. The president says he still believes in a successful reconquest of the fiercely fought-over city, which fell into Russian hands at the beginning of this year.

At the same time, Ukraine also sees that Russia has started attacking the country’s energy supplies. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal says there have been attacks on regional power plants in the last two weeks.

Last winter, Russia shelled energy supplies and infrastructure almost every day, regularly leaving people without electricity, gas or running water. Shmyhal acknowledges that it will likely be another tough winter, but believes his country is now better able to protect its power plants. Ukraine has received much more air defense from Western allies compared to last year.

Second grain ship left after deal ended

A grain ship also left Ukraine on Friday. It is the second ship to leave the Ukrainian port after the grain deal expired.

The cargo ship Aroyat arrived in Ukraine on Saturday together with another ship, the Resilient Africa. It left for Israel via Turkey on Tuesday. The Aroyat is on its way to Egypt with Ukrainian grain.

The ships sail across the Black Sea via a route that avoids international waters. They sail along the coast of Romania and Bulgaria. That reduces the chance of a Russian attack. The Ukrainians came up with this route, which they call a “humanitarian corridor”.

In July, Russia announced that it would not extend the grain deal. In that agreement it was agreed that Ukrainian grain could be exported across the Black Sea despite the war. Because Ukraine is a major grain exporter, the end of the deal had a global impact.
