Canada will welcome as many Ukrainians as it can

WARSAW (AP) — Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday during a visit to Poland that his country will take in as many Ukrainian refugees “as we can.”

Trudeau said it “breaks our hearts” to see millions of Ukrainians fleeing for their lives, leaving everything they have behind.

“Canada will help, Canada is there to help,” Trudeau said in Poland, a NATO member country that neighbors Ukraine and has opened its border to refugees.

Nearly 1.5 million people have fled to Poland since February 24, when the Russian army invaded Ukraine.

During his talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Trudeau voiced support for opening Poland to refugees and discussed how to support Ukraine and continue harsh sanctions on Russia.

In Warsaw, Trudeau also held talks with visiting US Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trudeau said his government is speeding up immigration procedures to allow refugees to quickly reach Canada, where many people of Ukrainian descent live.
