Canada-US extreme heat wave kills hundreds

Vancouver

Millions of people in western Canada and the northwestern United States are on alert heat wave turn off. A number of deaths have even been reported as a result of the heat wave.

As reported by AFP, Thursday (1/7/2021), Canadian police reported that the heat wave that occurred in the Vancouver area had caused at least 134 people to die suddenly since last Friday. This heat is reportedly unprecedented.

“The temperatures recorded this week are unprecedented, lives have been lost and the risk of wildfires is at a very high level,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

Meanwhile, the same thing happened in the northwestern US city of Seattle, where local doctors reported a ‘flood’ of heatstroke victims. According to him, there have been 2 people aged 65 and 68 years who have died due to hyperthermia.

Not only that, soaring temperatures in the valleys, mountains, and deserts of California also raise concerns about the possibility of forest fires. That possibility is exacerbated by dry, windy conditions, with thunderstorms expected to spark fires in parts of the western US.

President Joe Biden even said at a virtual meeting with governors from western states that the threat of wildfires in the western region this year is as severe as the previous year.

Recalling last year’s record wildfires that burned more than 10 million acres across the US and caused “orange skies that look like doomsday,” Biden warned that this year “could be even tougher.”
